Lithuanian banks prepare to expand services to nine municipalities

LithuaniaPlanned

Banks in Lithuania are preparing to open consultation branches in nine municipalities currently without bank offices, under an initiative coordinated by Lietuvos bankas.

The new locations are planned for Prienai, Pakruojis, Zarasai, Ignalina, Šakiai, Pagėgiai, Rietavas, Kazlų Rūda and Kalvarija between January and March 2027. Swedbank is expected to provide most of the new branches, which will operate on flexible schedules and offer everyday financial services.

SEB opened a periodically operating branch in Trakai in September, while Swedbank plans to establish another consultation point there in December.

Lithuania currently has 155 bank branches and alternative physical service points in 46 municipalities. Taking neighbouring municipalities into account, Lietuvos bankas estimates that physical banking services are accessible to approximately 96% of bank customers.

The expansion aims to close the remaining geographical gaps in access to banking services, particularly outside the country’s larger cities.
