LithuaniaPlanned

Lithuania’s state-owned Altra has begun dismantling control and protection system channels in the second reactor at the decommissioned Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.

More than 200 channels are scheduled for removal over the coming months, with this stage expected to be completed in early 2027. Remote-controlled equipment is being used to reduce workers’ exposure to radiation.

Altra CEO Linas Baužys said the company is applying experience gained from dismantling similar channels in the first reactor, where that work has already been completed.

More than 46% of the plant’s equipment scheduled for dismantling has now been removed. Dismantling of the reactor cores is planned to be completed by 2043, while the overall decommissioning project is expected
