IKEA Retail Baltics is rolling out exoskeleton devices at its Baltic operations to enhance workplace ergonomics. The exoskeletons are designed to support employees performing tasks such as lifting and carrying. IKEA Baltic management says the initiative follows deployment of more than 400 exoskeletons across 14 countries by the central IKEA organisation.

The rollout in the Baltics will begin in Latvia with the first units at the Riga store and the order-point in Liepāja. After a six-month pilot, seven units are in everyday use. According to IKEA Baltic, the devices help staff feel less fatigued after shifts and better maintain posture. The central IKEA group also states that in many countries the devices support the reduction of musculoskeletal strain among employees.

Context:

Workplace ergonomics and employee health initiatives are becoming more common across European retail and logistics settings in response to labour shortages, training costs and regulatory pressure. For Baltic countries, inclusion of advanced ergonomic technology in a major employer’s operations signals growing uptake of automation and wearable solutions in the region. Observers will watch how the Baltic deployment scales and whether usage data leads to broader adoption.
