🇱🇹KN Energies moves forward with Klaipėda CO₂ terminal planning

KN Energies has selected Sweco Lietuva to carry out the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and spatial planning for its planned COâ‚‚ transshipment and storage terminal in KlaipÄ—da.

The assessment will cover both the construction and operational phases of the terminal, which is planned within the existing KN Energies liquid energy products terminal area. The start of EIA and spatial planning marks a transition from concept development to the formal permitting stage.

The Klaipėda project forms part of the CCS Baltic Consortium, coordinated by KN Energies. The consortium’s objective is to establish a full carbon capture and storage (CCS) value chain in the Baltic region — from CO₂ capture at industrial sites, through maritime transport, to long-term geological storage in the North Sea.

The terminal is planned as open-access infrastructure, allowing multiple industrial emitters to connect rather than serving a single client, and positioning KlaipÄ—da as a regional COâ‚‚ logistics hub.

In 2024–2025, the European Commission granted the project Project of Common Interest (PCI) status. The consortium is co-funded under the Connecting Europe Facility for Energy, with project implementation targeted by 2030.

Context:

For the Baltic region, the project illustrates how climate policy timelines are translating into transport infrastructure decisions, with ports increasingly integrated into cross-border industrial logistics chains. BSM@2026
