Estonia wants security to take 19% of its next EU funding package
Estonia has set out its initial priorities for the next EU funding period, proposing that 19% of its future European funding package should go to security and crisis preparedness.
The government is working with an indicative envelope of around €6.5 billion for 2028–2034. Under its proposed allocation, 33% would go to economic competitiveness, while 38% would support agriculture, rural development, fisheries and food-related priorities. Another 10% would be directed towards education and social policy.
The figures are not yet an approved allocation. They represent Estonia’s starting position as negotiations over the EU’s next Multiannual Financial Framework develop.
The government’s initial investment plan through 2031 covers around €5.5 billion.
Signal: Security is being built directly into Estonia’s proposed architecture for the next EU investment cycle, taking a share approaching one fifth of the prospective funding envelope alongside competitiveness and traditional agricultural support.
