Estonia exported 74,648 tonnes of fish in 2025 — Ukraine remained the largest market

Estonia exported 74,648 tonnes of domestically caught fish and Estonian-origin fish products in 2025, with frozen Baltic herring and sprat forming the core of the trade.

Frozen fish alone accounted for 45,958 tonnes. Baltic herring made up 53.2% of that volume and sprat another 31.9%.

Ukraine remained Estonia’s largest destination for fish and fish products. Exports there reached 26,019 tonnes in 2025, down from 37,884 tonnes in 2021. Statistics Estonia links the decline both to the war in Ukraine and lower fishing quotas.

The trade also shows a clear regional pattern. Estonia exported most of its frozen herring to Ukraine and Lithuania, while its main markets for frozen sprat were Ukraine and Latvia.

Processed fish and preserves accounted for another 10,441 tonnes of exports, led by Ukraine and Finland. Estonia also exported 9,406 tonnes of shrimp, with almost one-third going to China, followed by Iceland.

Between 2021 and 2025, Estonia exported an average of about 76,000 tonnes of fish and fish products annually.
