Latvia and Lithuania average €96/MWh as Baltic power prices fall to €6–9 at the weekend

Wholesale electricity prices fell sharply across the Baltic region in the second half of last week as wind generation recovered.

Between 14 and 20 September, Lithuania’s average Nord Pool price declined by 16%, from €114/MWh to €96/MWh. Latvia recorded the same weekly average, while Estonia remained lower at €70/MWh.

The week started under very different conditions. NordBalt was unavailable due to annual maintenance, wind generation in Lithuania averaged only 58 MW during the first two days, and more expensive gas-fired generation was needed.

By Wednesday, average Lithuanian wind generation had risen to 760 MW. Stronger wind output across the Baltic and Nordic region reduced the need for thermal generation, pushing average weekend electricity prices in the three Baltic countries down to just €6–9/MWh.

The week illustrates how quickly Baltic electricity prices can move when interconnector availability, gas generation and wind conditions change simultaneously.
