Latvia prepares freight transport systems for EU-wide eFTI from July 2027

Latvia is preparing its road transport legislation for the full implementation of the EU electronic Freight Transport Information system, or eFTI, from 9 July 2027.

From that date, authorities across the EU will be required to accept regulatory freight information submitted electronically through certified eFTI platforms.

The system is designed to replace fragmented exchanges of transport documents with standardised digital data that can be accessed by enforcement authorities when required.

Latvia has already designated the Road Transport Administration as the national contact point for eFTI circulation and is adapting its transport regulation and control systems ahead of the EU deadline.

For logistics companies, the change creates a common framework for submitting freight information electronically across EU markets, potentially reducing document-processing time and administrative errors.

The EU rules do not themselves require every operator to abandon paper documents from July 2027; rather, they require public authorities to be able to accept compliant electronic information.
