Sunly opens 54 MW solar park as part of Latvia’s €100m hybrid energy project

Estonian renewable-energy developer Sunly has opened a 54 MW solar park near Matīši in northern Latvia, the first operating part of a larger hybrid energy project combining solar, wind generation and battery storage.

The wider project is expected to attract around €100 million in investment and use a shared grid connection for the three technologies. According to Latvia’s investment agency LIAA, the project has received permission for what it describes as the first hybrid park of this kind in the Baltics.

The solar component is already operating and is expected to generate enough electricity annually to match the consumption of around 15,000 households. Financing for the wider development involves the European Investment Bank, EBRD and SEB.

The project is notable less for the 54 MW solar capacity itself than for the planned combination of generation and storage behind a common grid connection, allowing the site to use existing grid capacity more flexibly.
