Estonia’s imports rise 10% as domestic exports stagnate

EstoniaData released

Estonia’s goods imports increased by 10% year on year in August 2026, while exports grew by just 3%, according to Statistics Estonia. Imports reached €1.84 billion and exports €1.48 billion, leaving a trade deficit of €360 million.

Higher spending on energy products was a major driver of import growth. Imports of mineral products rose by 30%, including a 67% increase in automotive fuel imports, largely reflecting higher global oil prices.

Meanwhile, exports of goods of Estonian origin remained unchanged from August 2025 and accounted for 62% of total exports.

Trade within the Baltic region expanded. Estonia’s imports from Lithuania rose by 28%, mainly due to mineral products, while exports to Latvia increased by 19%, including higher shipments of natural gas and electricity.

The figures point to stronger cross-border trade flows, but provide limited evidence of broader growth in Estonia’s domestically produced exports.
