Litgrid Launches Planning Tender for Fifth Lithuania–Latvia Power Interconnection

BalticAnnounced

Lithuanian electricity transmission system operator Litgrid has launched a tender for territorial planning and environmental impact assessment services for the proposed Varduva–Brocēni power line, which would become the fifth electricity interconnection between Lithuania and Latvia.

The planned 330 kV line will include an approximately 14-kilometre section in Lithuania and forms part of a broader programme to strengthen cross-border electricity infrastructure.

According to Litgrid, completion of the programme would increase electricity transmission capacity between Lithuania and Latvia from 1,250 MW to 2,250 MW. The upgrades are also intended to facilitate the connection of additional renewable energy generation and improve electricity system reliability.

The Varduva–Brocēni project is scheduled for completion by 2033, while the wider interconnection reinforcement programme is expected to be completed in 2034.

The newly announced tender concerns the planning and environmental assessment stage, not construction of the line.
