Lithuanian bakery turns Vilnius line toward the Danish market

Vilniaus Duona, part of Sweden’s Lantmännen Unibake group, has started producing three new portion-bread products in Vilnius for export to Denmark.

Production began in August after Lantmännen approved the investment in April. Around €750,000 was invested in dough preparation and processing equipment, modifications to the forming line and production processes.

The project has increased the capacity of the specialised portion-bread line almost threefold, to as much as 170 tonnes per month. Vilniaus Duona also formed and trained an additional shift for the expanded production.

The line was already producing portion breads for the Lithuanian market, but had previously been used only at a relatively low level. The company says it has now also received inquiries about the products from Sweden and Norway.

The project is a small but clear example of production specialisation inside a Nordic-Baltic industrial group: Swedish-owned Lantmännen is using its Lithuanian bakery as a production base for the Danish market, with the possibility of further Scandinavian exports.

One question remains open: whether the Danish volumes represent additional production within the group or replace output previously supplied from another Lantmännen facility.
