Riga completes €82.6 million Kundziņsala overpass to improve port access
Riga has completed the €82.6 million Kundziņsala overpass, a major transport infrastructure project connecting the city’s road network with the industrial territory of the Freeport of Riga. The new route will open to traffic on November 1.
The 863-metre overpass links Tvaika Street in Sarkandaugava with Kundziņsala, providing a more direct route for freight traffic to the port terminals. The project, implemented by Riga City Council and the Freeport of Riga Authority, is intended to divert heavy vehicles away from residential neighbourhoods and the city centre.
Around 360,000 trucks pass through the port’s Kundziņsala checkpoints annually, according to the municipality.
A new six-lane port checkpoint, Delta 17, will open alongside the overpass. The port authority invested another €1.3 million in the facility, which includes automated number-plate recognition and digital cargo processing.
Both the new and existing checkpoints will operate until the end of 2026. From January 2027, freight traffic serving Kundziņsala port terminals will be routed through the new overpass and Delta 17 checkpoint.
