Sunly qualifies 100 MW for Latvia’s balancing market

Renewable-energy developer Sunly has qualified up to 100 MW of capacity to participate in Latvia’s electricity balancing market.
Latvia’s transmission system operator AST has prequalified Sunly Hz to provide manual Frequency Restoration Reserve, or mFRR, in both upward and downward directions. The arrangement allows several generation and storage assets to be aggregated into a single reserve unit.
Sunly already operates 277 MW of solar capacity in Latvia. Another 104 MW solar park in Saldus municipality is under construction, while four planned battery systems would provide a combined 490 MWh of storage.
The important change is not simply another addition of renewable capacity. Solar, wind and storage assets are increasingly moving into system services that help match electricity supply and demand. That role has become more important since the Baltic states synchronised with Continental Europe and assumed greater responsibility for maintaining system balance within the region.
