Ignitis considers €200 million gas power plant in Estonia

EstoniaAnnounced

Lithuanian energy group Ignitis is exploring the construction of a gas-fired power plant with a capacity of up to 200 MW near Tartu, Estonia. Its subsidiary, Ignitis Renewables DevCo1 OÜ, has applied to Kastre municipality to initiate detailed planning for a site in Uniküla.

The proposed facility would provide electricity system restart capacity in the event of a major blackout. It could also participate in electricity markets when not required for emergency operations. The proposed location offers access to Estonia’s main gas transmission network and high-voltage electricity infrastructure.

The planning area covers 60.1 hectares, while the estimated investment is approximately €200 million.

The project remains at a preliminary stage. Kastre municipality has not yet initiated the detailed planning procedure, and Ignitis has made no final investment decision. The company is considering several possible locations and will assess the conditions of a planned procurement by Estonia’s transmission system operator Elering, expected towards the end of 2026.
